Start a meeting

Any GA member can start a group, and two people are enough. This is a summary of GA's Group Handbook; the people below can help you set it up.

Steps

  1. Check there is no meeting nearby, in person or online, that already fits.
  2. Find at least one other person who wants to stop gambling and will commit to meeting every week. Talk it over with members of nearby groups.
  3. Choose a regular day, time and place. Groups usually rent a church, community or hospital room, or give a regular donation.
  4. Pick one person to tell GA about the group, so it is listed and you can ask for a starter kit.
  5. Agree to follow GA's Guidance Code and use only GA-approved literature, bought through your Intergroup or service office.
  6. Write down a meeting format and decide who can attend (anyone, or only people with a gambling problem) before the first one.
  7. Let nearby meetings, the local Intergroup and local health services know it exists.
  8. A new group can vote on matters affecting GA as a whole after three months of weekly meetings.
